Rebuilding the bombed Munich Residenz, Rudolf Esterer inserted a concert hall into the Festsaalbau on the Hofgarten side; it opened in 1953. The name comes from the tapestries of the Hercules legend commissioned by Duke Albrecht V in 1565, which hung there until 1993, when printed copies replaced them. With 1,270 seats and room for 180 standing, it is one of Munich's principal halls and the home of subscription series by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Its Steinmeyer organ of 1962 was rebuilt in 2017–18 to seventy-nine stops.
