Horizont is Bulgarian National Radio’s national news-and-music service. Its launch was announced by Bogomil Aleksiev at six in the morning on 4 January 1971, as part of a reorganisation that also introduced the Hristo Botev and Orpheus programmes. The new service placed hourly news bulletins within a continuous sequence of information and music. In September 1974 it expanded to round-the-clock broadcasting. Its development has involved reporters and correspondents across Bulgaria and abroad, alongside presenters, music editors and sound-production staff. The combination of regular news, discussion and music remains central to its identity. Since 4 January 1971 the first programme of Bulgarian National Radio has been called Horizont; it runs round the clock, mixing news blocks — Predi vsichki, Horizont do obed, 12 plyus tri, Neshto poveche — with music, and gives its evenings over to music programmes that change with the day of the week. One of them, Allegro Vivace, has its listeners choose a Musician of the Year, presented at a Sofia concert.
