The polygonal square is the centre of Altötting in Upper Bavaria and has drawn Catholic pilgrims since the Middle Ages. The Gnadenkapelle with its Black Madonna stands in the middle; the collegiate parish church closes the south side, the Jesuit church and the convent of St Magdalena the east, the town hall, the Hotel zur Post and the deanery the north. John Paul II said mass here before 60,000 people in 1980, Benedict XVI in 2006. Open-air concerts use the same ground.
