Kolodrum Plovdiv is an indoor cycling and multipurpose arena that opened on 30 August 2015. It replaced the earlier outdoor velodrome at Akademik Stadium, cleared in 2008. The project began through the Tsar Simeon cycling club and a private investor; after construction delays, public funding supported its completion and municipal operation. The wooden cycling track was designed by the Dutch specialist Sander Douma. In addition to cycling and other sports, the arena accommodates concerts, conferences and large staged events. Cycling built the Kolodrum. Plovdiv's velodrome was laid out for the bicycle, and the shape that sport requires — a banked oval with seating around it — has proved useful for gatherings far larger than any race. Touring theatre and staged spectacle have made use of the space, among them a production built around the search for Figaro. Few cities have a hall of this capacity; those that do tend to press it into service for everything.
