Bamberg's symphony orchestra spent more than four decades in a borrowed room. From 1950 it played in a former Dominican church, a makeshift arrangement that lasted until the autumn of 1993, when the purpose-built Konzert- und Kongresshalle opened to designs by the Munich architects Rollenhagen and Großmann. The principal room, the Joseph-Keilberth-Saal, seats about 1,400 and holds a four-manual organ made for it by Georg Jann of Alkofen, with 74 stops and 5,830 pipes; the second hall, named for Hegel, who taught in the city, takes up to 700. Visiting orchestras appear on the same stage, and Mozart's overture to The Marriage of Figaro is among the music that has been heard there.
