Fire took the old court theatre in January 1924 — a house whose lineage ran back to a riding school of 1755 and to the Mecklenburg-Strelitz court theatre of 1779. Its replacement, designed by the Munich theatre architect Max Littmann with a team of sculptors and craftsmen, opened on 2 June 1928 with Mozart's Così fan tutte. War damage in April 1945 forced a second rebuilding, carried out between 1952 and 1954, which kept the exterior and modernised everything behind it. The house has changed names with the times — Friedrich-Wolf-Theater from 1954, Landestheater Mecklenburg in 1991, Landestheater Neustrelitz since 2000 — and now works within Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz, sharing an orchestra across the two towns and mounting music theatre, drama, ballet and philharmonic concerts. Each summer the company moves outdoors for the Schlossgartenfestspiele in the palace gardens next door.
