Built on fifty thousand square metres of specially prepared lakebed on the shore of the Forggensee, this theatre was raised between 1998 and 2000 to Josephine Barbarino's designs — 160 metres long, 80 deep, 32 high — for a single purpose: the musical "Ludwig II — Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies", with music by Franz Hummel, which opened the house on 7 April 2000 within sight of the Bavarian king's own castles. Financial trouble and changes of ownership followed. The theatre reopened on 1 April 2017 under the name Ludwigs Festspielhaus, and in August 2020 took back its original title, Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein. Its programme now runs to concerts and touring productions alongside its own shows.
