Twice destroyed and twice rebuilt, the Barnabite pilgrimage church on the Mariahilfer Berg began as a wooden chapel in 1656; a stone successor of 1668–69 fell in the siege of 1683. Sebastian Carlone the Younger and the stonemason Ambrosius Ferrethi raised the present structure between 1686 and 1689, and Franziskus Jänckl gave it its final form in the years to 1726. Outside, on the square, stands Heinrich Natter's monument to Joseph Haydn, who lived his last years in the parish. Inside hangs the Schustermichl, a bell of 1720 weighing close to four tonnes, and a romantic organ built by Johann M. Kauffmann in 1894. The church has housed the festival "Orpheus in Wien".
