Five towers rise from Carl Boos's Marktkirche, the tallest of them close to 98 metres and still the highest point in Wiesbaden. Boos laid the foundation stone on 22 September 1853 and finished in 1862, modelling the design on Schinkel's Friedrichswerder Church in Berlin and making it the first building in the Duchy of Nassau constructed wholly of brick. Music has been the church's second vocation. Max Reger played its Walcker organ between 1890 and 1896; the instrument, first heard in 1863 with 53 stops, now speaks through 85 registers and 6,198 pipes after its last enlargement in 1982. Saturday organ recitals at market time, monthly Bach cantatas and concerts of the Rheingau Musik Festival fill the calendar, and a carillon of 49 bells — the largest in Hesse, installed in 1986 — sounds over the square outside.
