Bergheim lies in the Rhenish lignite country west of Cologne, and its congress and event centre serves the surrounding Rhein-Erft district as concert hall, conference venue and civic meeting place. Touring concert programmes make up a regular part of its calendar. The centre opened in September 2004 after an architectural competition held in 1997 and construction between 1999 and 2004, to designs by Zander with Busmann & Haberer. Its large hall holds up to 1,000 people and the small hall up to 250, alongside seven multipurpose rooms, the municipal library of some 50,000 items, a ticket office and a cafe. It is run by BM.Cultura GmbH, formed on 1 June 2003 as a subsidiary of the town of Bergheim. MEDIO.RHEIN.ERFT is a cultural and conference centre on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz in Bergheim. Operated by BM.CULTURA as part of the town's cultural provision, it accommodates performances, public celebrations, business events and private functions.
