Mozarteum University Salzburg traces its origins to the Dommusikverein und Mozarteum, founded in 1841 to train musicians and strengthen musical life, particularly church music. The music school became an independent public conservatory in 1914 and was nationalised in 1922. Later reorganisations led to Hochschule status in 1970 and university status in 1998. Its teaching extends across music, acting, directing, theatre, stage design and arts education, combining performance with pedagogical and research programmes. The university also maintains an Innsbruck campus, whose music-education activity began in 1981. It is institutionally separate from the International Mozarteum Foundation and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, despite their shared historical origins and name. Founded on 22 April 1841 as the Dommusikverein und Mozarteum — half conservatory, half archive of Mozart documents — the Salzburg institution became a public music school in 1880, a conservatory with public rights in 1914, a Hochschule in 1970 and a university under its present name in 1998. From Mirabellplatz it teaches orchestral instruments, voice, church music, conducting, composition, drama and directing, and awards doctorates in musicology and music education; Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Michael Gielen and Carl Orff taught there. Its master courses travel: voice classes have been run jointly with Pleven, the participants' final concerts given in Pleven and Sofia.
