On 14 May 1948 some two hundred and fifty people gathered in a converted house on Rothschild Boulevard and signed Israel's declaration of independence. The house had been the home of Meir Dizengoff, Tel Aviv's first mayor, who gave it to the city in 1932 in memory of his wife to serve as its art museum; when the museum outgrew it the building became Independence Hall.
The museum moved to Shaul Hamelech Boulevard in 1971 and has grown by wings ever since — the sculpture garden and a new wing in 1999, the folded concrete geometry of the Herta and Paul Amir Building, by Preston Scott Cohen, in 2011. Its auditorium is used for chamber concerts and recitals, and the museum has long been part of the city's musical calendar as well as its visual one.
