The Unification Museum exhibition in Plovdiv forms part of the Regional History Museum and occupies a building designed for the Regional Assembly of Eastern Rumelia. Italian architect Pietro Montani prepared the plans, and construction took place between 1883 and 1885. Bulgaria’s unification in September 1885 removed the need for the intended provincial parliament; the building instead received the Plovdiv public library and museum in March 1886. The present exhibition opened in 1985 for the unification centenary. Its displays trace the development of Eastern Rumelia, the unification movement and its defence in the Serbo-Bulgarian War through documents, photographs, weapons, uniforms and personal objects. A central assembly hall and administrative wings preserve the original architectural arrangement.
