Watchmaking paid for the culture of La Chaux-de-Fonds, the high Jura town laid out on a grid so distinctive that UNESCO has listed it, and where Charles-Édouard Jeanneret — Le Corbusier — was born. Its concert hall has a reputation out of all proportion to the size of the place: recording engineers have long favoured it, and orchestras and soloists come up the mountain to use an acoustic that flatters strings without blurring them. The town's own musical life, chamber-based and serious, is built around it.
