Founded in 1868, Serbia's national theatre moved into its building on Republic Square the following year and has never left it — the house has been rebuilt, extended and restored across a century and a half, but the address has held. Three companies share it: drama, opera and ballet, each with its own establishment, playing in repertory on the main stage and in the smaller room behind it. For Belgrade the building is a fixed point of the city as much as of its musical life, standing where the old town meets the square that takes its name.
