Founded in 1953 as the Teatrul Muzical, Brașov’s opera institution developed a repertory spanning opera, operetta, musical theatre and ballet. It became the Teatrul Liric in 1996 and adopted the name Opera Brașov in 2001. Based on Strada Bisericii Române, the company presents staged productions for adults and children alongside vocal and instrumental concerts. Its activities also include festivals, competitions, touring and exchanges with other performing institutions, combining a permanent local season with work beyond the city. Transylvania's old Saxon town of Brașov, set beneath the wooded slope of Tâmpa, maintains an opera house of its own. What is played there spans both halves of the lyric theatre's work — Verdi's Don Carlo on one side, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake on the other — which is the pattern of a house that keeps a company of singers and a company of dancers in the same building.
