The Orangerie at Glücksburg stands within the landscape of the castle park, whose origins go back to 1733. Built in its present form in 1827 to a design by W. F. Meyer, it is a single-storey classical building with a columned portico. Restored in 1948, it became a setting for cultural events organised by the local Kulturkreis. Its history links the former practical life of the castle gardens with Glücksburg's later use of its historic buildings for public cultural activity. Glücksburg's whitewashed water castle stands on its own lake at the head of Flensburg Fjord, close to the Danish border, and the orangery in the grounds is used for concerts. Bizet's Carmen has been heard there under the conditions such rooms impose: a glasshouse acoustic, reduced forces, and almost nothing between the singer and the listener.
