Since 1958 the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana has been the island's principal symphony orchestra, resident in the Politeama Garibaldi, the neoclassical theatre with the bronze quadriga above its triumphal arch at the centre of Palermo. Constituted as a foundation, it sustains a winter season and a summer one, carries programmes to towns across Sicily, and runs a children's choir and extensive schools work beside the main series. Living Italian composers have a place in what it plays: Michele dall'Ongaro's Freddo has been among the scores it has taken up.
