The Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco traces its foundation in Guadalajara to the composer José Rolón in 1915. Originally the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra, it adopted its present name in 1988, reflecting a wider role within the state of Jalisco. Its home is the Teatro Degollado in central Guadalajara. Conductors associated with its development have included Manuel de Elías, José Guadalupe Flores, Guillermo Salvador, Héctor Guzmán, Alondra de la Parra and Marco Parisotto. Its history connects a local orchestral initiative with a state cultural institution. Guadalajara's Teatro Degollado, the mid-nineteenth-century house at the heart of the city, is where the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco plays. Its season runs across most of the year in numbered subscription programmes, giving Mexico's second city a continuous orchestral life rather than an occasional one — no small thing in a country where symphonic activity has tended to concentrate in the capital.
