Piazza Varchi is a civic square in Montevarchi, in the Tuscan Valdarno. It is overlooked by the Palazzo del Podestà, long associated with the town’s magistracy and now used for municipal council meetings and art exhibitions. The palace preserves the layered history of local government: its façade was altered in 1866 and received painted decoration and sculpted medallions in 1932. The square also accommodates outdoor cultural programmes, including concerts connected with the Festa del Perdono. Its public role joins the everyday administration of the town with seasonal gatherings and live performance. Montevarchi sits in the Valdarno between Florence and Arezzo, a market town of moderate size whose central square carries the name Varchi. For most of the year it serves trade and civic gatherings; in summer it turns to performance, and Puccini's La bohème has been staged there in the open air. The Valdarno touring circuit strings a dozen such squares together across a few weeks each season, and this is one of its stops.
