Thirty-three players gave the first concert on 29 April 1955, when the ensemble was still a provincial orchestra of Poland's south-eastern corner; it became a state symphony orchestra in 1958 and in 1967 took the name of Artur Malawski, the composer and conductor born at nearby Przemyśl. Orchestra and concert hall are one institution: the building on Chopin Street in Rzeszów was finished in January 1974 and thoroughly rebuilt in 2009–10, when European funds paid for new acoustics and stage technology in both halls. From that address the Philharmonic gives the province its orchestral season — symphonic subscription concerts, choral works with visiting soloists, and programmes for schools — and remains the principal room for classical music in the region, host to the touring ensembles that pass through the Subcarpathian capital.
