The Romanian Radio Academic Choir was founded in 1940 under the conductor and composer Ioan Croitoru. Its work combines concerts at Bucharest’s Sala Radio with recordings for commercial release and the broadcaster’s music archive. The repertoire extends from oratorios and cantatas to madrigals and short a cappella works. Romanian music, both traditional and contemporary, has a sustained place in its activity, including premieres and compositions dedicated to the ensemble. The choir has also toured internationally and collaborated with orchestras in Romania and abroad. Radio Romania keeps a professional choir alongside its orchestras, and this is it — a body trained for the microphone as much as for the hall, which is a particular discipline. Its work runs to oratorio, a cappella repertoire and the choral pages of opera given in concert, Verdi's Stiffelio among them, sung at Sala Radio with the broadcaster's own instrumental ensembles.
