The Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra was established in September 2018 with support from presidential grants and the Russian Ministry of Culture, under the curatorship of the Moscow Philharmonic. Its first nationwide auditions selected one hundred young musicians from twenty-eight cities. Conceived as an orchestral academy as well as a performing ensemble, it combines rehearsals and concerts with coaching by experienced orchestral players. During its inaugural 2018–19 season it gave forty concerts in thirteen cities and developed programmes introducing wider audiences to orchestral music. Formed in Moscow in 2018, this is a training orchestra on a national scale: players are drawn by audition from conservatoires across the country, rehearse in Moscow and pass through the ensemble as their studies end and professional careers begin. The turnover is the point. Programmes run to the standard symphonic repertoire, with Russian music at the centre of it.
