Raised between 1959 and 1960 immediately behind the former royal palace, Sala Palatului was built for congresses and holds more than four thousand people, with two thousand square metres of foyer and eight smaller rooms alongside. Its guest list has been correspondingly various: meetings of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the World Population Conference, and — the reason musicians know it — the George Enescu Festival, whose largest concerts have long been given here. Few halls of that capacity are kind to an orchestra, but sheer size has made it indispensable to Bucharest.
