Johannes Seiz, a pupil of Balthasar Neumann, built Engers between 1759 and 1764 as a summer and hunting residence for Johann Philipp von Walderdorff, Elector of Trier. Januarius Zick painted the great Diana hall, Ferdinand Tietz supplied the sculpture, Michael Eytel the stucco. The building's second life suits it unusually well: it houses Villa Musica, the foundation of Rhineland-Palatinate and Südwestrundfunk that places young string players and pianists in chamber ensembles beside established musicians, while the state music academy occupies the neighbouring Meisterhaus. Concerts run indoors through the year; in summer the enclosed courtyard opens the season to the sky, with the Rhine a short walk away.
