The park of Schloss Neuhaus at Paderborn, a moated Weser Renaissance castle of the sixteenth century, whose grounds were laid out for the state garden show of 1994 and are used as an open-air stage. A fortified house stood on the site from 1257. Jorg Unkair built the Haus Braunschweig front between 1524 and 1526, and by 1590, under Dietrich von Furstenberg, four round towers had been added and the building brought to its four-wing plan. It was the seat of the prince-bishops of Paderborn from 1370 until the Prussian annexation of 1802. The baroque garden was completed in 1736 under Clemens August; the castle now houses a school and a residence museum. The gardens of Schloss Neuhaus form the historic centre of Paderborn's Schloss- und Auenpark. Around the former residence of the prince-bishops, the Baroque garden was reconstructed from an eighteenth-century plan for the 1994 state garden show. From May to October, the castle and garden provide the setting for the Schloßsommer programme of cultural and entertainment events.
