Landsberg am Lech grew rich on the salt road where it crossed the river, and the profit still shows: the painted house-fronts of the Hauptplatz, the Bayertor of 1425 guarding the upper town, and the rococo façade of the town hall by Dominikus Zimmermann, who served Landsberg as mayor as well as architect. The municipality itself promotes performances in this setting, bringing touring companies into a townscape that needs no scenery built for it. Verdi's Nabucco has been among the operas given under its auspices.
