Built between 1901 and 1903 to plans by Jakob Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert, on the Neckar bank at the edge of the old town, the hall went up as the citizens' assembly and festival building for the centenary of the university reform of 1803. Its Festsaal holds up to 2,481 and keeps a Voit organ of 1903, one of the first large German organs with electric action and a movable console. It was restored in 1979-80, then closed again for a rebuild costing 57 million euros, paid for by Wolfgang Marguerre, and reopened on 1 February 2026.
