Money for this theatre came from a will. Arnold Geiser, a native of Langenthal who rose to be city architect of Zurich, left his home town some 100,000 francs for a concert and theatre hall; the citizens approved the scheme, building began in 1914, and the house designed by Keiser & Bracher was opened on 17 December 1916. It has never maintained a permanent ensemble. A main auditorium of 400 seats and a studio of about a hundred take in drama, musical theatre, dance, cabaret, circus and children's programmes alongside the work of local societies. An overhaul in 1955 was followed by a thorough renovation from the Bern practice Aebi & Vincent around 2017. Touring opera reaches Langenthal by the same route as everything else: Bizet's Carmen has been among the productions received.
