The theatre goes back to the Imthurneum of 1867, endowed by the merchant Johann Conrad Im Thurn to hold a music school and a concert and theatre hall on the Herrenacker. When plaster fell into the empty auditorium during a rehearsal in 1952 the building was closed, and it proved cheaper to demolish it; the present house opened on 13 October 1956 with a larger stage and a sinking forestage. It seats up to 687, is subsidised by city and canton, and keeps no company of its own — from September to June it takes in drama, music theatre, dance and cabaret, and the Schaffhausen Bach festival plays here.
