The building went up as an imperial industry and trade exhibition hall and opened on 28 May 1898; in 1924 it was converted into a cinema and concert hall of 900 seats. When the old town theatre in the former Celestine church proved too small and too dated, the stage wing was demolished and a new one built onto the exhibition hall in 1957–58 to plans by Karl von Tobisch-Labotýn; the theatre opened on 27 September 1958 with La Bohème. It still doubles as the town cinema, and touring opera companies use it — Turandot in 2010, Otello in 2012.
