Daniel Neff, a Swiss gardener, began laying out Borisova Gradina in 1884, and it became Sofia's first and still its largest public park, enlarged by later designers as the city grew around it. The open-air stage within belongs to that same idea of the park as a place of shared pleasure. On summer evenings the capital's orchestras play there under the trees, symphonic programmes included, to audiences who would otherwise be indoors.
