Built to designs by the Viennese partnership of Fellner and Helmer — the firm that furnished central Europe with theatres from Vienna to Odessa — the Cieszyn house came late in that long practice, and it survives with its plan and much of its decoration intact. The town it was built for was divided a decade later, when the frontier along the Olza left the theatre on the Polish bank and its suburb on the other. It carries the name of Adam Mickiewicz, and its programme runs from drama to the vocal-music festival Viva il Canto, which brings singers and orchestras to a stage of exactly the right scale for them.
