Ángela Peralta, the soprano Mexico called its nightingale, sang Lucia di Lammermoor at the opening on 13 September 1866 — ten years after Jacobo Gálvez began building, through war and a change of regime. The house had been intended as the Teatro Alarcón; in 1861 it was renamed for Santos Degollado, a general who had died that year. Behind its neoclassical portico the interior was decorated over successive campaigns, most strikingly with a painted reading of the fourth canto of Dante's Commedia. Four further inaugurations followed — 1880, 1910, 1941, 1964 — each after fresh work on the building. It is Guadalajara's opera house and the hall of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.
