The Theater an der Ilmenau in Uelzen was built in 1970 and seats approximately 800 spectators. Its programme brings visiting drama, dance, cabaret and symphonic music to the town, alongside performances for younger audiences. The theatre is also associated with the international Friedrich Kuhlau flute competition and accommodates art exhibitions. Local cultural organisations, including Kulturkreis Uelzen, contribute to its activity, while the UhlStars ensemble connects the venue with community performance. The Ilmenau runs north through the Lüneburg Heath to the Elbe, and Uelzen's theatre takes its address from the river. It is a receiving house rather than a producing one, its year built from visiting drama companies, concerts, operetta and opera on tour — the arrangement by which northern German market towns keep a stage in work without maintaining an ensemble.
