The town's first theatre opened on 2 October 1842 in Mecklenburger Straße, to a design by the Wismar master builder Heinrich Thormann. It burnt to the foundations in January 1948, and the replacement went up that same year out of an old infantry barracks on the western edge of the old town, to plans by Leo Einzig; it stands there still, on what is now the campus of Hochschule Wismar. The town's own ensemble played until 1963, after which Schwerin took over. The Großes Haus seats 439.
