Polygonal, board-marked and unmistakably of its decade, the Stadttheater at Ingolstadt opened on 21 January 1966 to designs by Hardt-Waltherr Hämer and Marie-Brigitte Hämer-Buro, with Walter Rossow among the landscape architects. It was conceived to stand between two inheritances — the medieval street pattern of the town and the classical fortifications of the Bavarian garrison — and the result took the Bavarian BDA prize in 1967 and was shown at Expo 67 in Montreal. The main auditorium holds 663; a festival hall takes up to 1,300, and four further spaces complete the complex. Drama, opera, concerts and dance run across all of them, some five hundred performances in a year.
