Gottfried Böhm designed the house; building began in 1982 and it opened on 26 September 1992 with a recital by the cellist David Geringas. The town runs it and keeps no company of its own, so the stage is filled by touring productions and by the Schleswig-Holstein Landestheater with its symphony orchestra. The main auditorium takes between 235 and 700 depending on how it is set, with a second hall of about 250 seats and a studio for up to 150, over some 4,800 square metres. Drama, music theatre, ballet, chamber music, symphony and rock all pass through; the building was listed as a monument in 2017.
