The Théâtre de Longjumeau was built in the 1970s and reopened in March 2003 after eighteen months of renovation. Its facilities include a main auditorium with 954 seats and a smaller auditorium accommodating up to 300 spectators, together with galleries and reception spaces. The theatre presents large-scale entertainment and visiting performances. Artists who have appeared there include Alain Souchon, Véronique Sanson, Julien Clerc, Michèle Laroque and Jamel Debbouze, reflecting a programme that crosses song, theatre and comedy. Adolphe Adam made the name of this Essonne town famous in 1836 with "Le postillon de Lonjumeau", an opéra-comique still sung for the terror of its high notes. The theatre Longjumeau maintains today is a municipal one, south of Paris in the valley of the Yvette, offering drama, concerts, opera on tour and programmes for families to an audience drawn from the surrounding communes.
