Fellner and Helmer, the Viennese partnership responsible for theatres across half of Europe, gave Zurich its concert hall in 1895; Brahms took part in the opening festivities. The Great Hall that resulted is counted among the finest-sounding rooms anywhere, and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich — founded in 1868, the oldest symphony orchestra in Switzerland — has played there ever since. Volkmar Andreae, Hans Rosbaud, Rudolf Kempe, Christoph Eschenbach and David Zinman are among the musicians who have directed it; Furtwängler, Klemperer and Böhm appeared as guests. A comprehensive restoration closed the building for several years, and it reopened in 2021.
