The University of Milan was inaugurated on 8 December 1924 following an agreement signed that August. Luigi Mangiagalli brought together civic and financial support for a university encompassing law, humanities, medicine and science. Veterinary medicine was incorporated in 1932 and agriculture in 1935. After the Second World War, reconstruction and new research centres accompanied a substantial expansion of its buildings and activities. In 1958 the rectorate, administrative offices and the faculties of humanities and law moved into the Ca' Granda, the former Ospedale Maggiore. The historic hospital thus became the central seat of a university whose teaching and research had developed across several areas of Milan. The Ca' Granda, begun in 1456 as Milan's great hospital and rebuilt after the bombing of 1943, has housed the university since the middle of the twentieth century; its arcaded courtyard is among the finest rooms in the city without a roof. La Statale, founded in 1924, keeps an orchestra and a choir of its own, drawn from students and staff. Both the Aula Magna and the courtyard serve as concert spaces, the latter chiefly in summer.
