Laid out on the high ground above the shore from the late nineteenth century and shaped over decades by the Czech gardener Anton Novák, the Sea Garden is Varna's great public park, planted with species brought from far outside Bulgaria. It holds an open-air theatre, an aquarium and an astronomical observatory within its walks. In summer the theatre carries concerts and staged opera, the sea audible behind the orchestra — a setting that has become part of how the city hears music.
