Dating from 1946, the Wiener Kammerorchester was assembled in a city still clearing its rubble, and it has kept since to the repertory its size serves best: the Viennese classics, the baroque, and twentieth-century works for small forces. Philippe Entremont's long association shaped its playing over decades, directing from the keyboard as often as from in front of it. The orchestra appears regularly at the Konzerthaus and the Musikverein, tours widely, and is often heard as partner to soloists in the concerto repertory — work that asks for a flexible, listening kind of ensemble playing.
