Choral singing has deep roots in the towns of the Danubian plain, and Pleven — which supports a professional symphony orchestra of its own — keeps several ensembles at work. Zvanika is one of them, joining the city's orchestral forces when a programme calls for voices. Orff's Carmina Burana, that most demanding of invitations to a chorus, has been among the works it has sung in Pleven. The name comes from the Bulgarian word for a chime. Zvanika was founded in Pleven in 1984 by Ivanka Deliyska at the city's Centre for Work with Children. For its thirty-fifth anniversary, the choir received the Golden Lyre of the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers.
