Violin
Biography
Since November 2007 Alexandru Tomescu has been the custodian of the Elder-Voicu Stradivarius, an instrument owned by the Romanian state and awarded by open competition, which he has had to win again more than once. He built the Stradivarius Tour, an annual circuit that carries the violin to small towns and continued in 2025. Other projects have taken him to an underground station, a forest and a ruined house. Born in Bucharest in 1976, he studied with Tibor Varga in Switzerland and Eduard Schmieder in the United States, and has played under Gergiev, Masur and Eschenbach, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Carnegie Hall and in Tokyo. His Romanian repertoire includes Enescu, whose works featured in the Stradivarius tours of 2015 and 2025. He is a permanent soloist of the Romanian National Radio Orchestra and Radio Chamber Orchestra, and has given benefit concerts for people with visual and hearing impairments and for architectural heritage campaigns.
