Tenor
Biography
Formed at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in his native Turin and afterwards in Raina Kabaivanska's school — and counted among the last young singers to work with Luciano Pavarotti — Andrea Carè won the Spoleto International Opera Competition in 2005 and took the Beniamino Gigli Prize in 2014. Born in 1981, he sings the Italian and French dramatic tenor roles: Don José, Pollione, Cavaradossi, Radamès, Don Carlo and Pinkerton, at Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bolshoi, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Canadian Opera Company. He appears in the Nabucco filmed for Sony Classical and released in 2015, alongside Plácido Domingo. His early stage roles at Spoleto included Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor in 2005 and Yarbas in Galuppi's Didone abbandonata, recorded for Bongiovanni, with Alfredo following in Seoul in 2007. Don José he first sang at the Terme di Caracalla in Rome in 2009, Pollione at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna in 2008 and Pinkerton at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019. Beyond the central repertoire he has taken on Reyer's Sigurd, Mascagni's Iris, Ponchielli's La Gioconda and Janáček's Jenůfa and Šárka, and has worked with conductors including Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Noseda and Jakub Hrůša.
