French horn
Biography
Nine years old when he took up the horn, Ben Goldscheider studied with Susan Dent in the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music and completed his training with honours at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin under Radek Baborák. Born in London in 1997, he reached the concerto final of BBC Young Musician in 2016, was a prizewinner at the Young Classical Artists Trust auditions in 2019 and was nominated by the Barbican as an ECHO Rising Star for 2021/22. Much of his work is done with living composers: he has commissioned and premiered horn concertos and taken the instrument into electroacoustic writing. His premieres include Brian Elias's Horn Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo at Aldeburgh and, on 8 May 2026, Anna Clyne's Sirens with the London Mozart Players under Jonathan Bloxham. He is principal horn of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, a principal player of Camerata Pacifica and a member of the Boulez Ensemble, and he holds a professorship at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. His records include Legacy, a tribute to Dennis Brain with new pieces by Huw Watkins and Roxanna Panufnik, and a concerto disc with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Lee Reynolds.
