Narrator
Biography
Trained in musicology, political science and Romance studies in his native Vienna, where he was born in 1962 and completed his studies in 1989, Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz became chief dramaturg of the Vienna State Opera and later joined the management of the Volksoper Wien, where he served as chief dramaturg until 2022. His formation owed much to Marcel Prawy, the opera historian and broadcaster. Austrian audiences know his voice as much as his programme books: with Karl Hohenlohe he has commentated the Vienna Opera Ball for ORF since 2001. He ran the Theatersommer Haag between 2013 and 2016 and has directed the Operette Langenlois festival since 2020, and has written books on Richard Strauss, the Vienna Philharmonic and the musical theatre of the city. Before the dramaturgy he had been press director at the Vienna State Opera, and he came into the management of the Volksoper in 2003. His work has also included music dramaturgy at the Gaertnerplatztheater in Munich.
