Eliane Coelho studied architecture in Rio de Janeiro before pursuing singing. Born there in 1951, she studied from 1971 at the Musikhochschule in Hanover and later joined the Frankfurt Opera. The Vienna State Opera, where she first sang in 1991 and was made Kammersängerin in 1998, became one of her opera houses: her roles there included Salome, Tosca, Cio-Cio-San, Liù in Turandot, Abigaille and Lady Macbeth. Her wider repertoire includes Norma and Amelia. La Scala, the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin Staatsoper, the Opéra Bastille and the Teatro Regio in Turin have all heard her, and her repertoire has also included Isolde, Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung and Cherubini's Medea. In January 2007 she sang in a concert performance of Verdi's Stiffelio in Bucharest with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, in a cast with Kamen Tchanev, Oana Andra and Eduard Tumagian, the chorus prepared by Dan Mihai Goia. She has returned to Brazil for Giorgetta in Il tabarro, in Rio de Janeiro, Belém and Manaus. In Vienna she also sang Donna Anna, Elettra and Hanna Glawari, and in June 2002 she came with the company to Sofia for the title part of Salome in concert, conducted by Peter Schneider. Her Brazilian work has included orchestral concerts and song recitals, among them appearances at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte.
