Baritone
Biography
Gianpiero Ruggeri's Italian repertoire includes Silvio in Pagliacci, Samuel in Un ballo in maschera and the title part in Rigoletto, sung in Italian theatres and in productions abroad. His work reaches from Mozart and Rossini through Verdi and verismo to twentieth-century Italian opera, and he sang Rigoletto with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016. In 2002 he took part in a Munich production credited to Dario Fo. He came to singing from the trombone, which he played in the RAI Symphony Orchestra in Rome, studied with Sesto Bruscantini and made his vocal debut as Belcore in L'elisir d'amore; Gustav Kuhn brought him to the Teatro Regio in Parma as Olivier in Capriccio. Detroit, Cologne, Tokyo and Beijing are among the cities where he has sung, Don Giovanni, Leporello, Guglielmo, Figaro and Sharpless among his other roles, and Kurtág figures in his recordings.
